Over $400,000 awarded for LGSOC research in the United States

Over $400,000 awarded for LGSOC research in the United States

Our United States Research Partner, STAAR Low-Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer, has announced three research grants for low-grade serous ovarian cancer (LGSOC) totalling over $400,000, carefully selected to drive progress in areas where patients need it most.

Grant one: A High-Throughput Screening Program to Discover Combinatorial Treatments Targeting Low-Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer

Dr Hilary Kenny from the University of Chicago has been awarded $150,000 over three years to look for promising new treatment combinations for low-grade serous ovarian cancer, using a technology called high-throughput drug screening that allows scientists to quickly test hundreds of drugs.

Grant two: Capitalising the presence of MAPK pathway alterations in low-grade serous ovarian cancer with next-generation direct pan-KRAS inhibitors

Dr Dimitrios Nasioudis and Dr Fiona Simpkins at the University of Pennsylvania are using a new approach to target a common mutation in LGSOC. The mutation called KRAS, is found in up to half of all LGSOC tumours. While some targeted treatments exist, they don’t work for everyone and can stop working over time. The $150,000 grant will help them investigate a new pan-KRAS inhibitor in the laboratory in the hope of finding better treatment options for those with KRAS mutant LGSOC.

Grant three: Analysis of full-length transcripts in low-grade serous ovarian cancer by long-read sequencing

Right now, LGSOC is treated like one disease, but we know not all tumours behave the same. In a project jointly funded with Not These Ovaries Professor KK Wong at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has been awarded $115,580 to use cutting-edge RNA sequencing to identify new biomarkers that could help identify in advance which drug will be most effective in treating LGSOC.
