Low-Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer Research in canada

The Low-Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer Initiative has proudly partnered with the BC Cancer Foundation since 2018 to fund research specific to low-grade serous ovarian cancer (LGSOC) in Canada. The BC Cancer Foundation is the fundraising partner of BC Cancer, supporting world-leading scientists and clinicians across British Columbia.

Gynaecological oncologist and LGSOC researcher Dr Mark Carey started researching LGSOC in 2013. Today, he leads one of the world’s largest LGSOC research laboratories out of BC Cancer in Vancouver. Dr Carey’s lab is renowned for their expertise in producing LGSOC cell lines – living scientific models that form the basis of LGSOC research. They’ve created the largest repository of cell lines which are used by almost every LGSOC scientist in the world from the United Kingdom to New Zealand. Their lab works across a wide array of LGSOC research, tackling LGSOC from all angles to advance survival.

Support from the Low-Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer Initiative has fostered international research projects and helped sustain their work in times of limited funding.

Dr Carey’s research team includes:

  • Dr Marta Llaurado Fernandez – Program Manager and Research Scientist
  • Dr Nelson Wong – Staff Scientist
  • Hannah Kim, Yuen Yee Leung, and Chanel Ghesquiere – Research Technicians
