Low-Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer Research in the united states
The Low Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer Initiative has proudly partnered with the STAAR Ovarian Cancer Foundation since its inception in 2020, to fund low-grade serous ovarian cancer (LGSOC) research in the United States of America.
STAAR stands for Survive. Thrive. Advocate. Advance. Research. They share our passion for improving outcomes for people with LGSOC. As a charity founded and led by members of the LGSOC community, their first-hand experience of the disease motivates their commitment to LGSOC research.
STAAR’s Research achievements include:
- In 2022, STAAR raised funds to award $76,000 to the University of Texas MD Anderson research into Trametinib resistance, and $250,000 to Memorial Sloan Kettering to research which patients are more likely to respond to chemotherapy.
- In 2023, STAAR awarded $100,000 to Stephenson Cancer Center at University of Oklahoma Health Sciences for a combination drug trial including Fulvestrant, as well as an additional $50,000 to the Trametinib resistance study at MD Anderson.
- Last year, STAAR also hosted the first-ever externally led patient focused drug development meeting (ELPFDD) for ovarian cancer. The meeting amplified the voices of patients with LGSOC and conveyed to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that this is a distinct disease in need of specialised treatment.
Our stories, experiences and advocacy during the meeting served as a powerful catalyst.
It brought attention to the urgent need for more research, better treatments, and a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those with low-grade serous ovarian cancer.

In addition, in partnership with the LGSOC Initiative (called Cure Our Ovarian Cancer at the time), the World Ovarian Cancer Coalition and Verastem Oncology, STAAR was honoured with an Inspirational Collaboration Award at the World Ovarian Cancer Coalition Impact Awards for planning the ELPFDD meeting, as well as a multi-stakeholder global survey of those living with LGSOC.
