Low-Grade Serous Ovarian Cancer Research catalogue
As a rare cancer, information about low-grade serous ovarian cancer can be hard to find. We created this research repository to help people looking for detailed and specific information about low-grade serous ovarian cancer.
On this page:
A guide to published research
Journal articles (also known as papers and studies) are one of the tools doctors use to make decisions about the management of low-grade serous ovarian cancer. They are written in technical language for doctors and scientists.
It is important to note that research only tells us what has happened in the past to a group of people (often the “average” person). Each and every person with low-grade serous carcinoma is a unique individual. There is no guarantee that there was someone exactly like you in the research studies. Research conclusions can also change over time as further studies and information becomes available.
If you need help reading a paper you could ask your primary care doctor to assist. Yale also has a free course to help people understand medical research. We recommend you discuss any research you read with your cancer specialists; they are best placed to help you understand if/how the research relates to you.
The database contains a selection of research studies published on low-grade serous ovarian cancer. We have grouped research papers alphabetically by the type of research.
Members of our LGSOC support groups can find details to access a searchable database of the full text papers in the group under “Files”.
Things to keep in mind when reading research
- When was it published? Consider the publication date to assess the timeliness of the research.
- What experience/qualifications do the authors have? Consider the authors’ expertise and credentials in the field.
- How reputable is the journal’s publisher? Check the credibility of the journal to ensure the research is published by a respected source.
- What type of research is it? Look at whether the study is observational, interventional, or another type.
- If it involves people with cancer, how many? Low-grade serous studies often involve small sample sizes, which means different studies may find different results. Generally in medicine, larger sample sizes provide more reliable results.
- Do the abstract, discussion and conclusion align with the results? Ensure that these sections are consistent with the study’s findings.
- Are there other studies with similar results? The most reliable research is corroborated by multiple studies and repeated by independent researchers. For low-grade serous studies, there may be limited research, increasing the possibility of future changes in conclusions.
- Remember, you’re not a number. Journal articles reflect past outcomes for groups of people, often representing an “average” case. Future developments may change the landscape (we hope so!), and individual experiences can vary. No study can predict with certainty what will happen to you personally.
